What does decompression look like for you?

Summer tends to be a whirlwind — packed with festivals, travel, social commitments, and the relentless hustle as we find ourselves in an increasingly unsteady economy and political climate. This intense activity often leaves me feeling drained and in need of serious decompression. I just returned from Burning Man, which added a layer of physical and emotional exhaustion, with its unpredictable weather, communal challenges, and overwhelming sensory feast.

Across the board, this season demands everything we have—long hours, emotional highs and lows, unexpected storms, and sleepless nights. It’s easy to get caught up in the chaos, losing sight of the need to reset and reconnect as we transition into a new season.

I write this because it’s exactly what I need to hear. I am someone with serious FOMO, and I tend to push myself too hard. That’s why it’s so important to find ways—sometimes unexpected—to decompress, ground, and reclaim my peace.

Burning Man was physically and emotionally intense. Yet, despite the exhaustion, the nighttime was the most extraordinary experience—like being on another planet in a video game. The discomfort of crowds, rain, mud, heat, dust, and wind made the refreshing night air feel even more precious. Art was alive everywhere—fashion, music, sculptures, art cars, mutant vehicles, food, pranks, antics, theme camps—an unstoppable force of creative expression that transcended superficial vanity and materialism. For me, the sense of art being woven into life, along with the enormous generosity and sense of community, far outweighed the negatives often highlighted in the media.

As I made my way back to pavement and the comforts of daily life, I found myself reflecting on the chaos and beauty of the experience. The mud, the storm, the sleepless nights—all essential parts of the journey. It reminded me that sometimes, true decompression means embracing the unpredictable, the uncomfortable, and the raw aspects of life. I also realized the importance of embracing the diversity of experiences in that space—understanding that not everyone enters with the same ethos, and THAT IS OK. That’s where genuine transformation happens.

Unconventional Ways to Decompress

Reconnect with Nature: It was such a needed break to turn off my phone for two weeks and disconnect. One effective way to decompress is to find weekly opportunities to unplug and immerse yourself in forests, lakes, or mountains. A silent walk or stargazing session can reset your mind more than anything else.

Creative Play: Engaging in art, dance, or music allows your brain to become “open,” mimicking that childlike state—no rules, no expectations. Letting your creativity flow freely can be remarkably healing.

Silent or Low-Impact Retreats: I never thought I’d get sick of house music, but after a week of thumping bass everywhere I went, I craved silence. Try a silent retreat or meditation in unexpected places like waterfalls or botanical gardens. The power of silence can help process some of the chaos of life today.

Explore New Cultures and Ideas: Newness can be uncomfortable, but it’s also enlightening—reminding us that not everything is predictable. Even at home, dive into different cuisines, music, or traditions. It broadens your perspective and revitalizes your spirit.

Burn Something: Fire is both creative and destructive. Watching thousands of people pour their grief into a temple and then watch it burn it was incredibly cathartic. You might try writing a letter to yourself or the season you’re leaving behind, then releasing or burning it as a symbolic act of transition and letting go.

Simplify: Declutter your space or digital life. Minimalism can bring clarity after an intense season. Maybe, what we need to find comfort is knowing we can survive—and even thrive—with less.

Build Connections: Join local workshops, dance classes, or community projects. Connecting with others helps ground you. After all, intimacy is the prize!

Looking Ahead

As we transition into a new season, remember that the unexpected often holds the greatest lessons. Embrace the surprises, the discomfort, and the beauty—they’re all part of the journey toward renewal.
